You want to make sure that your chimney is cleaned at least once a year.  It does not matter how often you use your fireplace and if you do not use it very often, you may think that you do not need to clean it very often, but an unused chimney makes a great nest for many species and you want to be certain that you have the chimney inspected before you use your fireplace after it has been unused for quite some time.  If you use your fireplace often, soot and other debris can build up and you will need a professional cleaning to help remove this buildup and make your fireplace safe for use.

Keeping the fireplace box clean and tidy is a great way to maintain your fireplace.  You will want to make sure that your fireplace is cooled off completely before you clean out the old ashes. You can create a very devastating situation if you place hot ambers in a container that is not fireproof and you want to make sure that you place anything that comes out of your firebox in a fireproof container.

A fireplace can break down after many years of use and you will want to have a professional come out and inspect your chimney before you begin using it for the season.  If there are any cracks in the chimney, you will want to have this repaired before your first use.  A fireplace that is not in good working order can be a very dangerous fireplace and you should never ignore an inspectors warning.  If you are a renter, this inspection should be provided by your landlord and this is something that you may want to inquire about.

Fireplace maintenance is something that should turn into regular routine if you have a fireplace.  A fireplace that is not inspected regularly can be very dangerous and you should never burn anything in a fireplace that you are unsure about and once your fireplace has a good report, you will be able to enjoy it all winter long without any worries.
